Microphone Test Online - Check If Your Mic Works

How do I test my microphone online?

Click "Allow Microphone Access" and grant permission when your browser prompts you. Speak into your microphone and watch the volume meter respond in real-time. The animated bar visualization shows your audio levels from green (quiet) through yellow to red (loud), confirming your microphone is capturing sound properly. If the bar moves when you speak, your mic is working.

Why should I test my mic before a call?

Testing your microphone before joining a Zoom, Teams, Discord, or Google Meet call prevents the frustrating "can you hear me?" moment. Use this tool to confirm your mic is active, check which device is selected, verify your voice comes through clearly, and catch issues like muted hardware switches or wrong input selection. Takes 10 seconds and saves you from troubleshooting during a live meeting.

Why is my microphone not working in the browser?

If the volume meter doesn't respond when you speak, check these common causes:

  • Browser permissions blocked - Look for a microphone icon in your address bar and click to allow
  • Wrong device selected - Use the dropdown to switch between connected microphones
  • Another app is using the mic - Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, or other apps that capture audio
  • Hardware mute switch - Check if your headset or mic has a physical mute button
  • Loose connection - Re-plug USB microphones or check Bluetooth pairing

The tool displays specific error messages for permission denials, device-not-found, and device-busy scenarios.

Can I record and play back audio to hear how my mic sounds?

Yes. After granting microphone access, click "Start Recording" to capture a test clip. Speak normally for a few seconds, then stop the recording. An audio player appears where you can listen back and assess your voice clarity, check for background noise, echo, or distortion, and verify your mic settings are optimal before important calls or recordings.

How does the volume meter work?

The volume meter uses the Web Audio API to analyze your microphone input in real-time. It calculates the RMS (root mean square) of the audio signal to determine the current volume level. The result displays as an animated gradient bar that responds instantly to sound, giving you visual feedback on your microphone's sensitivity, pickup range, and ambient noise floor.

Is my audio data private and secure?

All audio processing happens locally in your browser. Your microphone input is never sent to any server, never recorded remotely, and never stored. Recordings exist only in browser memory until you close the page. This makes the tool safe for testing before confidential calls or in sensitive environments.

How do I switch between multiple microphones?

If you have multiple audio input devices (USB mic, headset, built-in laptop mic, Bluetooth earbuds), the device selector dropdown lets you choose which one to test. The tool detects all available input devices after you grant permission. Switching devices reconnects the audio stream and updates the volume meter to reflect the new input source.

Can I test my mic on my phone?

Yes. The microphone tester works on Android and iOS in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox mobile. Open the page, allow microphone access, and speak - the volume meter responds the same way as on desktop. Useful for testing Bluetooth headset mics or checking your phone's built-in microphone before mobile calls. To also test your camera, use the Webcam Tester.
