Webcam Test Online - Check If Your Camera Works

How do I test my webcam online?

Click the "Allow Camera Access" button and grant permission when your browser prompts you. Your camera feed appears immediately as a live video preview. You'll see exactly what your webcam captures in real-time, letting you verify image quality, focus, lighting, and framing. The test works with any USB webcam, built-in laptop camera, or external camera device.

Why should I test my camera before a video call?

Testing your webcam a few minutes before joining a Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet call prevents embarrassing technical issues. Use this tool to confirm your camera is working, check that lighting and framing look good, verify the correct camera is selected (if you have multiple), and use the record-and-playback feature to see exactly how others will see you. Much faster than fumbling with settings after the meeting starts.

Why is my webcam not working in the browser?

Common reasons your camera test might fail:

  • Browser permissions blocked - Look for a camera icon in the address bar and click to allow access
  • Another app is using the camera - Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, or other tabs using your webcam
  • Wrong device selected - Use the dropdown to switch between connected cameras
  • Outdated browser - Update Chrome, Firefox, or Edge to the latest version
  • USB connection issue - Try a different USB port for external webcams, or disconnect and reconnect

If none of these fix it, restart your browser or computer. The tool shows specific error messages for each failure type.

Can I test my webcam without installing anything?

Yes. This camera test runs entirely in your browser using the Web API. There is no software to download, no plugin to install, and no account to create. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Just open the page and allow camera access.

Can I record video to check my webcam quality?

Yes. After granting camera access, click "Start Recording" to capture a test clip. The recording captures both video and audio from your camera and microphone. When you stop recording, a playback card appears where you can watch your clip and assess video quality, check for audio sync issues, and verify camera settings. Recordings stay in your browser memory and are never uploaded.

Is my video data private?

All video processing happens locally in your browser. Your camera feed is never sent to any server, never stored, and never shared. Recordings exist only in browser memory until you close the page. This makes the tool safe for testing cameras before confidential calls.

How do I switch between multiple cameras?

If you have multiple video devices (laptop camera, USB webcam, external camera), the device selector dropdown appears after granting camera permission. Select any connected device to switch the live preview. The tool automatically detects all available video input devices.

Does this webcam tester work on my phone?

Yes. The tool works on mobile devices with a camera, including Android phones and iPhones. Open the page in your mobile browser, grant camera permission, and you'll see the live camera feed. This is useful for testing your phone's front or rear camera quality in a clean interface without app clutter. If you only need to test audio, use the Microphone Tester instead.
