Split Images into Tiles Online
Transform any image into a grid of equal-sized tiles directly in your browser. Upload your image, set your preferred tile size, preview the results, and download all tiles as a convenient ZIP file. No signup required, completely free, and your images never leave your device.
How does the image to tiles splitter work?
This tool divides your image into a uniform grid of square tiles based on your specified tile size. Upload any image format (PNG, JPG, WebP, etc.), and the splitter calculates how many tiles fit horizontally and vertically. Each tile is extracted as a separate PNG file, preserving transparency if present in the original image. The entire process runs locally in your browser using canvas rendering.
What tile sizes can I use?
You can specify any tile size from 8 pixels upward. If you leave the tile size field empty, the tool automatically calculates an optimal size based on your image dimensions (approximately one-third of the image height, with a minimum of 64 pixels). For pixel art or game sprites, common sizes include 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, or 128x128 pixels. If needed you can also specify different tile sizes for horizontal and vertical tiles like 32x64 pixels.
Can I split images for Instagram carousel grids?
Yes. To create a seamless Instagram grid, upload your image and set the tile size so your image divides into 3 columns. For a standard 1080x1080 pixel square image, use a 360-pixel tile size to get a 3x3 grid. The tiles are named sequentially, making it easy to post them in the correct order for your Instagram profile grid.
How do I create sprite sheets and tilesets?
Game developers and pixel artists use this tool to extract individual sprites from sprite sheets or to split large textures into tileset pieces. Upload your sprite sheet, enter the exact tile dimensions matching your sprite size, and download the separated tiles. Each tile maintains its original pixel data, making them ready for use in game engines like Unity, Godot, or RPG Maker.
What image formats are supported?
The splitter accepts any image format your browser supports, including PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and SVG. All output tiles are saved as PNG files to preserve quality and support transparency. The tiles are bundled into a single ZIP file for convenient downloading.
How are the output tiles named?
Tiles are named using the pattern filename_x_y.png, where x and y represent the tile's position in the grid (starting from 0). For example, myimage_0_0.png is the top-left tile, and myimage_2_1.png is the tile in the third column, second row. You can customize the base filename before splitting.
Can I preview tiles before downloading?
Yes. After splitting, a preview grid displays all tiles in their original arrangement. You can toggle border lines on or off to see exactly how tiles align. This helps verify your tile size produces the desired result before downloading the ZIP file.
What if my image dimensions don't divide evenly?
When your image dimensions aren't perfectly divisible by the tile size, the tool creates tiles that may include partial content at the edges. The rightmost column and bottom row of tiles will contain the remaining pixels. For precise results, resize your source image to dimensions that divide evenly by your target tile size.
